Railroad Modeller

The photo above is a rebuild project of one of our early MakerSpace members, Allan Clark.

Allan is a longtime model railway hobbyist who scratch-builds most of his stuff. With this particular locomotive rebuild in the photo he is working with some of our MakerSpace members to “draw and print” a replacement “sand box” using one of our 3D printers. Welcome to the modern world railway man!

Allan was one of roughly 15 model railroaders who showed up Saturday, November 4 to see what our Oceanside Community MakerSpace was all about and how their home railroads can benefit from a membership at OCM. Allan has already found one way.

Another of our early Members, Jim Bennett helped organize Saturday’s event and is committed to making the new Oceanside Model Railroaders group a permanent fixture.

Whether you want to take out a membership and work on a layout here because there’s no space left at your house, or just learn more about working with our 3D printer team, or getting some advice on the electronics side… If you’re into model railroad building… contact jim.bennett@shaw.ca

Wednesday 26th

Every week progress is being made. Dave and Rob finished off the 2 large tables and I switched things around a bit – we now have a 5×8 ft table area in the centre of the “dining” space and a 4×8 ft table top on the other side of the kitchen. There is a donated Raspberry Pi setup with garage sale TV and a Pi for Dummies Book. A Ubuntu Linux Laptop and a Win 7 laptop to work on. I moved the TLC 3D Printer to the presentation area and we now have the 2 new/reconditioned Win 7 HP desktops with our 2 3D Printers, up and running – may need some further adjustments, but Poul and grand kids got the Delta printer printing and Shawne finished putting the Tevo Tarantula together and got that printing.

Another Wednesday

Time zips by and the 2nd Wednesday came round. We had another great turnout and a couple more visitors. We unloaded wood from the BLT2GoBus – to make two long tables and put a good smooth work-top on the workshop bench. Terry and Robert installed two sets of blinds in the kitchen windows (from the Salvation Army shop). David worked on setting up the 3 circular saws and the large band-saw. Paul and Shawne continued to work on the two new 3D Printers, and once things settled down a little, I offered to go through the basics of using the HICTOP 3D Printer.

Wednesday Nights

5 July was the first of our Wednesday night supervised sessions, that means that Associate Members can come and use the facility, knowing that there will be at least one Steering Committee member there to help and answer questions. Also, it is open for the public to visit and see what the Club offers and sign-up, if interested. If you come with a Member Friend to work on something together, you should read the waiver form, fill in a Donation envelope, insert $5 for the day and put the envelope in the donation box. This allows for one-off use by Member Friends and family visitors.
